Life Assurance, Critical Illness, Income Protection, Private Medical Insurance

These are all forms of personal insurance protection. Insurance is a way of protecting yourself against a particular adverse and unexpected event. If this happens, insurance will pay out an agreed amount. Of course, this may not happen, but you have to decide whether you are willing to take that risk.

There are a number of factors you will want to consider before taking out these types of insurance:

  • What personal cover do I already have in place?

  • Does my employer provide me with cover as part of my employee benefits?

  • What financial risk will I face if the unexpected happens?

  • What level and types of cover are appropriate for my needs?

  • What levels of insurance premium can I comfortably afford to pay?

Life assurance

Income protection (often known as permanent health insurance) - pays a monthly income if you are unable to work due to illness or injury, until you are able to return to work or reach retirement

Critical Illness

Insurance that pays a lump sum if you are diagnosed with a specific critical illness covered by the policy.

Income protection

(Often known as permanent health insurance) - pays a monthly income if you are unable to work due to illness or injury, until you are able to return to work or reach retirement.

Private Medical Insurance

Pays for you to receive private medical treatment.

The cost of cover varies with age and your sex. There may be additional costs if you suffer from certain health conditions; smokers also pay more. Your requirement for cover will vary during your lifetime. For example, to cover a mortgage, or to offer financial security to your family. If you are self employed, cover may be very important as you will have no cover from an employer and will be unable to earn if incapacitated.

Some elements of cover you already have may no longer be appropriate, or you may be able to replace cover more cheaply by using an alternative answer.
